I woke up at eight
this morning
and I left my flat
to walk the five
minutes into town.
On my way I
couldn’t help but
notice the pale blue sky
against the
dark city buildings.
The people I passed,
well they seemed
funny looking,
I couldn’t quite work out
what was wrong.
Their bodies moved
in a way that would
imply life,
but their faces
were blank.
I kept my head down
and walked into a shop
where I was greeted
by a young girl.
She sold me cigarettes
with a strange,
vacant smile and
then I left.
When I got outside
the shop I stopped,
fumbled with
my lighter for a moment
and lit a cigarette.
In doing so
I couldn’t help but
notice the pale blue sky
against the
dark city buildings.
I pondered on these
thoughts for a moment
or two
outside that little shop,
cigarette smoke
swirling around
my head.
People passed by
and wondered what
I was doing with my
face towards the sky.

I don't know. does this even count as poetry? really? it seems like a bit of a mess to me. I don't even know what it is I'm really trying to say here, but there is something I thought when i went to but my cigarettes this morning. I can't quite put my finger on it.

I like this one the most out of your recent submissions because we've talked about this before :) I love seeing someone take their thoughts and put it into poetry.

The thing i like the most about it is how you/the character in the poem, seems to be facinated by something that everyone else completley misses. I think finding beauty in the small things, like silouhettes of buildings against the sky, or cigarette smoke swirling around your head. I think thats one of the most important aspects of being a writer, a poet.

As far as to rather or not this counts as poetry, once upon a time when i was first beggining this wisened old poet sent me a letter and imparted some words of wisdom, the thing i rememeber the most about what she said was

"Poetry is saying something that's been said a thousand times before, in a completley different and new way."

And i think you've captured an element of that here :)
